First Growth Pinot Noir
"4.5 stars out of 5 Dry, medium bodied, it offers a warm, silky texture and the sweet spice of well-integrated oak. Rich, ripe fruit caresses the palate underpinned by ripe tannin and fine acidity. Earthy and spiced through the lasting finish, this is an intense wine that would be a match for roast beef with mushrooms. "

Vintage & Viticulture

This lot of 100 percent Pinot Noir was harvested from our 19 year old blocks of vines that were thinned to a restricted 2 tonnes per acre. The vines are located on Reif Estates 125 acre Vineyard found adjacent to the Niagara River, midway between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. The grapes were harvested October 17, 2007 with Brix levels at 24.4 degrees.

Winemaker's Notes:

Clean ripe fruit arrived to the winery within minutes of harvest.  The fruit was given a 24 hr cold soak before a selected yeast culture was added.  The fermentation progressed nicely and was completed in 3 weeks.  Pressed wine was immediately brought into new American barriques where the wine completed malolactic fermentation and aged for 27 months.

Tasting Notes:

The First Growth Pinot Noir is complex and rugged with aromas of smoky oak, ripe cherry and a hint of barnyard. The palate is loaded with fresh plum, cherry and red currant fruit with hints of vanilla, pepper and a touch of earthiness.  The finish is hearty with a distinct intensity to the tannins that makes it an exceptional compliment to any meal.

Food Pairings:

Grilled salmon, game meats with wild rice and portabella mushrooms, and pepper-crusted seared Ahi Tuna.
